Pathways to build a gender inclusive and climate resilient food sector in Cambodia

Climate change-driven extreme weather events such as droughts and heatwaves which pose a serious threat to rural livelihoods, food security, and poverty reduction in Cambodia. As one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in Southeast Asia, Cambodia’s rural population, heavily dependent on agriculture, faces increasing risks of crop failure, income loss, and economic instability. These impacts are not gender-neutral. Women, due to existing gender inequalities and their roles in food systems, face greater challenges in adapting to climate risks.
Yet, disaster risk reduction and climate resilience efforts often overlook gender disparities, limiting women’s capacity to respond effectively. Therefore, this study aims to addressing these gaps to enhance gender inclusive and resilient food sectors in Cambodia.
Project Objective
Two main objectives that this study aims to achieve:
1) To understand the changing role of women in agriculture due to climate change and explore how recent agricultural policies and modern agricultural cooperatives (MACs) support women’s evolving role in areas vulnerable to climate change.
2) To identify key agricultural policies and stakeholders involved in climate governance and assess their capacity to build resilience, in order to promote policy and practice reforms that enhance gender-inclusive food sectors in Cambodia.
