Project Description

Small-and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) are regarded as backbone of Cambodia’s economic growth (IFC 2010; Shariff et al. 2010). The number of formally registered SMEs is about 43,258 establishments, based on 2021 annual report by Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MISTI 2022), and the enterprises absorb around 435,849 employment. By sector, SMEs are categorized into 3 main sectors: Manufacturing, Services/Trade, and Agriculture. As country wide, most SMEs are located in Phnom Penh, Kandal, Takeo, Preah Sihanouk, and Kampong Cham, according to Economic Census for Cambodia 2011. The classification of sizes (micro, small, medium, and large) is made based on number of full-time employees (RGC, 2005). Definition of SMEs by SMEs sub-committee in 2005 was any enterprise with employees between 11 to 100 persons. However, to meet current situation of economy, the recent update of the classification includes number of full-time employees and revenues or assets.

Project Objective

To deeper understand the needs of SMEs in Cambodia. That is why this study will focus on 100 top-performing SMEs in the country from the 4 main categories: ICT, Manufacturing, Services (tourism and logistics), and Agriculture. The selected enterprises will be provided with entrepreneurial support by Khmer Enterprise.
